The Different Types of Garden Pond Filters

There are fishes like Koi that excrete big amounts of waste materials and use up large volumes of oxygen too. Fishes in the pond are similar to any other land animals that discharge waste. And when these wastes are not disposed of properly, it can turn into something poisonous. This is where garden pond filters come in. It eliminates the dangerous ammonia from waste products in the water.

If at all possible, the filter and the pump in your pond must be able to clean the water, by filtration, at least once every 2 hours. Keep in mind that you must not turn the filter off for more than 12 hours, unless you want your fishes to die.
Filters for garden ponds have many kinds and to pick the most suitable one for your pond, you must do a bit of research or ask professionals for some help. Here is a list of garden pond filters to choose from:

Internal filter – This internal filter is commonly made of big foam blocks. This filtration system is effective but there are some disadvantages like: the water may stop from flowing due to the debris that had accumulated in the foam (part of the filtration system). The said foam catches all the solid wastes materials so it has the tendency to become filled with too much debris, and this can result to blockage wherein the water can’t go through it anymore. Harmful bacteria may also form in the foam as all the accumulated wastes stay there until it’s time to changed it.

External filter – If there are types of filters that are placed inside the pond, there are also some that are installed in the exterior part of the pond. However, these types cost more and its construction also requires a few more things than the ordinary filters. But even if they are a bit expensive, they are worthy to be considered because they are easier to maintain and provide better performance. There are two categories under external filters and they are:

Pump-fed single-chamber filter –between the two categories, this is the most preferred. Some factors that push people to choose this type include:

  • Its set up only takes a few minutes.
  • It is available in almost all the shops that sell accessories for garden ponds.
  • It can handle a pond that contain up to 2,000 gallons of water.

Gravity-fed multi-chamber filter – this filter is usually mounted in the same level as the water. This positioning of the filter allows more gravity so more fresh supply of water flow into the pond.  This can be the best filter system even though it’s quite expensive. But you can lower its cost if you can design and install your own multi-chamber filter.

Skimmer filter – This type of pond filter is ideal for medium to large fish ponds that contain up to 5,000 gallons of water. This is typically mounted at one side of the pond wall.

To conclude, garden pond filters are the best filtering system that you will find to keep your fishes healthy but you must ensure that your filtration system is functioning well and is maintained properly. Otherwise, your fish will suffocate due to lack of oxygen and murky waters.
