Choosing the Right Koi Pond Pump Is Important
Your Koi pond cannot survive without a highg quality Koi pond pump. The pump is like the heart of humans that maintains the circulation of blood all over the body. Pumps are important in maintaining a bacteria-free and healthy water in the pond. They help in the aeration of the pond water that in turn helps in bringing back the oxygen that the fishes need. If your pond doesn’t have a pump or doesn’t have the correct pump, the water in your pond will be stagnant which will be a breeding ground for pests like mosquitoes. Your fish will not like it if there are pests living in their home and hurt them from time to time. This will also help algae grow in your pond and harm your fishes as well by the ammonia that they can bring to the pond. So if you are going to buy a pump, make sure that the pump is suitable to your pond in which it can circulate the water effectively to prevent the harmful elements from living comfortably in the pond.
There are two main types of Koi pond pumps: submersible and external. They have advantages over the other but they also have disadvantages.
Submersible Koi pumps are perfect if you have a small pond and you want to hide the pump. You can landscape your pond easily because you don’t have to worry about hiding the hoses and the pump itself. Before, submersible pumps are less powerful than the external pumps because they can only circulate small amount of water. But today, there are now powerful submersible pumps but they eat more energy as compared to the external ones. One advantage of having this kind of pump is the ease of installation and operation. This kind of pump is also less expensive as compared to the external pump. Submersible pumps require regular cleaning since they are submerged in the water and can accumulate different wastes from fishes and algae.
The external Koi pond pump is the traditional pump, and you have to hide the hoses and the machine to make your pond pleasing. These pumps can circulate big amounts of water thus making them perfect for large ponds. Since they are designed to operate in large ponds, energy consumption is less compared to the submersible ones. Maintenance is also not a problem since you can clean them separately from the pond and you can replace the parts. The only disadvantages of having external pumps are the price and the fact that you need to consider them in landscaping your pond.
In choosing the right pump for you pond, you should consider the recirculation ability of the pump. Ideally, the water should be circulated 100% every hour but 50% is acceptable. So if your pond can handle 2000 gallons, your pump should have a gph (gallon per hour) of 2000 or 1000. Less than 1000 will make your pump ineffective and can cause early retirement of the pump. Without proper circulation, the water will also become stagnant. If you have a large pond, you should also have a separate pump for the filtration system to effectively filter the wastes and unwanted elements in the pond. Another factor to consider is the consumption of energy since your pump should run 24/7. It is advised to buy a pump with 110V as the input power. If you have the correct Koi pond pump, you will surely have a healthy and aesthetically pleasing pond.
